A ground breaking ceremony has been held today when Minister for Planning, Honorable Matthew Guy MLC turned the first sod at Melbourne’s newestmarina and residential community, Wyndham Harbour.
After 25 years of planning, the $440 million harbour precinct will be a world-class activity and cultural centre offering a marina, safe boat harbour, luxury waterfront homes and lush green parks with walking and bike trails amongst a tranquil setting.
The development will mark a significant boost for the local economy and job market with WyndhamHarbour destined to become a major hospitality and tourism destination for the City of Wyndham.
“Once operational, the local and regional economies will benefit from an estimated 72,000 day trippers who are expected to visit the marina each year and generate $8 million in tourist expenditure.
“Wyndham Harbour will have ongoing economic, social and environmental benefits for the area. These include increased population for Werribee South, additional recreation and boating facilities, and the rehabilitation of the coastal foreshore vegetation and wetland planting,” Minister Guy said.
The first stage of construction by civil and marina contractor, BMD Constructions, has begun with bulk earthworks commencing earlier this month.
BMD Constructions Group Executive Director - Operations, Scott Power is pleased to have secured the construction contract for the Wyndham Harbour development.
“An excellent team effort converted this opportunity into what will be BMD Constructions largest project delivered in our 12 year history in Victoria,” Mr Power said.
Wyndham Harbour Acting Project Director, Angus Crisp expects the Stage 1 civils to be completed in early 2012 including external road extensions and wetlands landscaping.
“Today marks the beginning of the construction process for this exciting marina and residential project in Melbourne’s West.
“All approvals have been sought and council conditions met, which enables the project to progress with earthworks and civil construction now followed by the marina and apartment building works,” Mr Crisp said.
Council Mayor, John Menegazzo, and CEO, Kerry Thompson who were both in attendance at the event are enthusiastic about the community amenities that the project will provide the City of Wyndham.
“Wyndham Harbour will become a central hub for our community, with retail, residential and recreational facilities in this beautiful waterfront area approximately 30kms from Melbourne’s CBD,” Ms Thompson said.
Melbourne’s Liberman Family purchased the site over 6 years ago and has undergone a lengthy planning and approvals process to deliver this much-needed safe boat harbour that has been in coastal strategy for over 25 years.
Sales for the development have been extremely strong with Stage 1, 2 and 3 land releases and the apartment product completely sold out. Long-term marina berths are selling extremely fast, and the recent release of Stage 4 showcases the most premium lots available at the development.
